Why Do People Like Nostalgia?
The word nostalgia comes from the Greek nostos, meaning homecoming, and algos, meaning pain. At first, it sounds like nostalgia has a negative connotation. However, the people who are experiencing it nowadays are most likely referring to an event that gives them a lot of pleasure (even if it is just a memory from the past).
Bettina Zengel, a lecturer at the University of Essex, said that nostalgia is an inherently bittersweet emotion, but typically a positive one. “You can think of feelings of nostalgia as a source of strength that can help people face the challenges of the present and orient themselves towards the future.” She also added that when people feel nostalgic, they tend to also feel more positive towards themselves, more connected with others but also more optimistic and inspired.
It is no wonder that nowadays many people like to reminisce about things that have happened in the past. All of this is supported by the emergence of places (such as restaurants, coffee shops, etc.) that have the feel of a few years back. There are also singers who remake songs from other old singers. In addition, there are also some foods that have not appeared for a long time and are then resold, thus making many people buy them as a form of nostalgia.
So what are the real benefits of nostalgia? Why are so many people excited about this phenomenon?
1. Improves our mood
Nostalgia is sometimes triggered by sad feelings or events that someone is currently experiencing, or it can also be experienced by people who are feeling lonely. Someone who is too sad can easily remember the beautiful things that have happened in the past. This makes him nostalgic and subconsciously brings him to mind that there are beautiful things to be grateful for.
2. Gives us hope for the future
Although nostalgia refers to things that have happened in the past, but it also helps us look forward to the future. Like when someone looks back on their childhood records that were so passionate about reaching their goals, this will wake up those who were about to give up. They find support from the spirit of their past.
3. Makes life more meaningful
According to a study published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, nostalgia can specifically help people who deal with a fear of mortality. By making individuals feel as though their lives are meaningful and valuable, nostalgia can remind us all that it is possible to overcome hardships and can also give our lives purpose.
4. As a relaxing therapy
People who visit their hometown, listen to their childhood or youth songs, or eat the food they used to find in their school cafeteria will feel pleasure. It can definitely reduce muscle tension and stress, lowers blood pressure, and controls pain.
