“That account is a freaking joke, in a bad, bad way,” Annisa, one of Universitas Indonesia students, expressed her annoyance by writing her bad experience in a form of Twitter’s thread at the end of 2018 when her picture and some of her personal profiles being shared by @ui.cantik, an Instagram account that re-posted photos from Universitas Indonesia students, especially the female ones. At first, she thought everyone was happy that their pictures appeared on @ui.cantik’s Instagram feeds, but until her own photo was uploaded, Annisa changed her mind. She didn’t have any idea who had submitted her photo and personal information for @ui.cantik, the photo was being uploaded without any permission from Annisa. This controversy led to the arguments that there will be excessive access to privacy and the new term of harassment from social media, cyberbullying, nonetheless for those who may feel triggered about it, there were few people taking advantage of this issue.
The first point of this controversy is excessive access to privacy. Everything that is seen in social media may not necessarily be 100% real, some of them are just illusions in specific meaning. It means in some ways, certain people need recognition about their existence by others, even if they share or tell the untrue about something in their life. Social media is not a joke, it is a challenge for us to limit the freedom that leads to the rapid spread of rumors and hoaxes, said Wahyudi Djafar from Elsam. Why are our people more attracted to read and conclude passages and see pictures or photos shared without even collecting the information about the truth? The second thing is about cyberbullying. Voetstappen stated 9 out of 10 persons confessed that they have been physically and mentally hurt based on what people say on social media. Cyberbullying is a noun with the meaning of the use of electronic communication to bully a person, typically by sending messages of an intimidating or threatening nature (Google search.) For now, there is no such thing if teens in this era are being cut off from technology, especially from using the internet.
This controversy still occurred until now. People must know the negativity that occurred in this case, that is the excessive access to privacy and cyberbullying, while others may take advantage of it. To prevent the disadvantages, let’s set the limit for others to spread negativity such as hoaxes and rumours. Stop being a bully because many people in this world suffer from it. How hard is it to ask permission over something that does not belong to us? Being socially active does not mean we have to show off everything to others.
