Recently, a Korean boy group has just held a live concert after the activities were suspended due to pandemic. Many fans were really looking forward to it. They were willing to sacrifice many things to be able to meet the artists in person.

The crowds of fans did not only occur during the concert, even from the beginning of the members’ arrival, many fans were already waiting at the airport. This then raised the cons from many parties. Apart from disturbing other airport users, of course, the safety of both fans and artists was also a concern. Then what makes these fans so passionate about their artists?

Let’s call it as Parasocial Relationship. It is one-sided relationship, where one person extends emotional energy, interest and time, and the other party, is completely unaware of the other’s existence. Parasocial Relationship is exemplified by the relationship between the artist and the fans. Indeed, that does not mean the artists do not necessarily know their fans. However, they cannot only refer to one or certain people specifically, but to mention and acknowledge them as a whole.

Then how does this relationship emerge? Just like the real-relationship in general. This is formed as a result of the interaction and time spent between the two parties. Fans who often follow the artist’s activities, such as attending concerts, watching movies or reality shows, following the artist’s social media accounts, etc., will feel connected and even cause sympathy. For instance, when an artist wins an award, fans will feel very proud and blessed. Moreover, when they find out the bad news experienced by the artist, they will also feel down. Thus, in a more intense relationship level, not a few fans are willing to do anything to show the amount of feelings they have for their artist.

Doesn’t it sound pathetic? Obviously, there is no justification for an exaggeration. Everything must be well controlled. Including our feelings as fans.

Fortunately, this Parasocial Relationship also provides a positive impact for the fans. Individuals with this relationship often express appreciation towards their favorite artists for helping them to get through tough times. Many fans feel that their lives are more cheerful after getting to know the artist even if only through media intermediaries. They are motivated. They feel loved. They don’t feel lonely (anymore). And all the other positive things they get from the relationship.

At last, parasocial relationship can cause both positive and negative impact, especially for fans. It’s the fans who have control over what they get and how they should react to it. Then it becomes very important to be a wise fan. Cause at the end we know where this relationship goes, don’t we?
